SUMMARY

When you format charts in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above, the X Values tab will not appear in the Format Data Series dialog box unless the current series is the first series in the chart or the first series in the current group.

This is by design.

To access the X Values tab when you format a chart:

1. In the chart, select the first series ("S1") or the first series in a group. For example, if you have three series in a line group, select the first series of the three. (To select a series, click it with the mouse.)

2. From the Format menu, choose Selected Data Series.

3. Select the X Values tab.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

1. In a new worksheet, enter the following values:

      A1: 1   B1: 5
      A2: 2   B2: 6
      A3: 3   B3: 7
      A4: 4   B4: 8
   
   

2. Select the range A1:B4.

3. From the Insert menu, choose Chart, and then choose As New Sheet.

4. In the ChartWizard dialog box, choose the Finish button.

5. In the new chart, select the second series (S2).

6. From the Format menu, choose Selected Data Series.

1. In the Format Data Series dialog box, choose Cancel.

2. Select the first series (S1) in the chart.

3. From the Format menu, choose Selected Data Series.
