PRB: Graphical FoxPro Help and Low-Memory Situations

SYMPTOMS

In low-memory configurations, FoxPro for the Macintosh will not check to see if there is enough memory to load the graphical help engine. When launched, the Microsoft Help program may return the error "Can't add button" or may pause for a significant length of time.

NOTE: This behavior does not occur in Visual FoxPro for Macintosh.

RESOLUTION

For configurations exhibiting this problem, try using database-style help (FOXHELP.DBF), which takes less memory than the graphical help engine.

To use the database-style help, issue the following command:

   SET HELP TO SYS(2004)+'FOXHELP.DBF'

This syntax assumes that your current working folder either is FOXPRO or is the folder containing the FOXHELP.DBF file.

To have FoxPro for Macintosh default to this type of Help configuration, add the following line to the CONFIG.FPM file:

   HELP = FOXHELP.DBF
