SYMPTOMS

Using text form fields with the Maximum Length option set to less than Unlimited in Word causes the system to beep when you try to enter characters beyond the set maximum, as expected; but the system also beeps if you select some or all of the characters and try to replace the selection with new characters.

STATUS

This is the default action designed for use with form fields.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following options:

  • Backspace over or delete the text to be replaced, and then type the new text.
  • Press the INSERT key on the keyboard to turn on insert mode.
  • Double-click OVR on the status bar to activate overtype mode.
  • From the Tools menu, choose Options, select the Edit tab, and select Overtype Mode.
