SUMMARY
Included below is a summary of corrections made to the WPFT5.CNV converter
in Word 6.0a that is used to convert between Word and WordPerfect 5.0 and
5.1 for MS-DOS and WordPerfect 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows file formats. All
corrections listed here have been made since the immediately previous Word
6.0 product release. Corrected problems include:
Extra Paragraph Mark Inserted Following Converted Graphic
When you open a WordPerfect document in Word 6.0 and then save it again as
WordPerfect format, an extra paragraph mark may be inserted following
equation or figure boxes, resulting in unwanted space following the image
and possible affect on document pagination.
This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a. Unwanted paragraph marks
(WordPerfect [HRt] codes) are no longer inserted.
Unique Merge Field Names Revert to Default Field Names
When you save a Word 6.0 data document as WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.2 Secondary
File format and then reopen it from WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.2 Secondary File
format into Word, user-defined merge field names revert to WordPerfect's
default field names (for example, Name, Address, City becomes F1, F2, F3).
Original field names are now preserved in round-trip conversion to and then
from WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.2 Secondary File format.
Merge Field Names Containing Extended Characters Lost
When you save a Word 6.0 document in WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.2 Secondary File
format, if a merge field in the original Word document contains an extended
character, the field name is not retained. Instead, the field code appears
as follows in WordPerfect Reveal Codes:
[Mrg:FIELD]~
Normally the actual field name would precede the tilde character.
This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a.
Paragraph Numbering in Table Cells Generates Invalid WordPerfect Document
When you save a Word 6.0 document containing paragraph numbering applied
within table cells as WordPerfect format, an invalid WordPerfect document
may be generated. Such a document may appear editable initially but may
later cause WordPerfect to hang or return a general protection (GP) fault.
This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a.
Bullet Characters Appear Incorrect Following Round-Trip Conversion
When you open a WordPerfect document in Word 6.0, save it back to
WordPerfect format, and reopen it in WordPerfect for Windows, bullet
characters and/or any other characters emulated with characters from the
Symbol or WingDings symbol sets during import into Word 6.0 may appear
incorrect. For example, a round bullet may instead appear as the 8-ball
pool character. Although these characters are displayed incorrectly, they
will appear correctly in WordPerfect Print Preview and when printed.
This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a.
Summary Title Greater Than 68 Characters Generates Invalid Document
When you save a Word 6.0 document containing an entry greater than 68
characters in the Summary Information Title field as WordPerfect format, an
invalid WordPerfect document is generated. Consequently, all graphics and
formatting may appear lost when editing in WordPerfect, and WordPerfect may
hang or you may receive a GP fault.
This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a.
Converter Not Released from Memory When File Conversion Canceled
When you open a WordPerfect document containing one or more equations into
Word 6.0, if you cancel file conversion and then attempt to convert the
same document or any other WordPerfect document the following error message
may be received:
Word cannot start the converter WPFT5.CNV
This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a.
TOA Heading Style Not Retained in Round-Trip Conversion
When you save a Word 6.0 document containing the default TOA Heading style
in WordPerfect format and then reopen it from WordPerfect format into Word,
the applications of the TOA Heading style are lost and the Normal style is
instead applied.
This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a.
"Document Appears To Be Corrupt" or "Cannot Read File" Error
When Opening WordPerfect Document
WordPerfect Corporation released several silent updates to the WordPerfect
5.1 for MS-DOS program prior to the release of WordPerfect 6.0 for MS-DOS.
One of these updates (it is not known specifically which) contained a
problem in which the size of the actual components that make up the style
packet do not match the size specified for the style packet in the
WordPerfect document binary data stream. Technically this constitutes
document corruption, and thus Word 6.0 returns one of the two errors
referenced above when reading the file.
This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a. An adjustment was made in the
WordPerfect 6.0a converter to work around this problem and allow opening of
such documents.
