SYMPTOMS

If a pre-Service Pack 2 version of NTBACKUP is used to do an operation on a tape that was backed up using the Service Pack 2 (or later) version of NTBACKUP, the results are unpredictable. This usually takes the form of invalid directory or file structures.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because previous versions of NTBACKUP were not UNICODE- aware. The version included with Service Pack 2 adds UNICODE information to the directory structure that pre-Service Pack 2 versions cannot understand.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this problem, upgrade all Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server computers to the latest version available.
