SYMPTOMS
The Works for Windows Setup program may stop responding (hang) before the
"Welcome to the Microsoft Works Installation program" dialog box appears,
and/or the following error message may be displayed (object ID number may
vary):
Setup Parse Error in Reading Table File
! Object ID 15: Invalid Object Type Field

RESOLUTION
Try the following steps to troubleshoot this problem:
- Run CHKDSK /F or, if you have MS-DOS 6.2 or later, run SCANDISK from the
startup drive (usually drive C) MS-DOS prompt. On a system using a disk
compression utility such as DoubleSpace or Stacker, this may be a drive
other than drive C.
NOTE: Make sure you exit Windows before running these commands. If you
are using Windows 95, you can run Scandisk while Windows is running.
- Restart the computer with a minimum configuration (clean boot):
- Streamline the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files by removing or
remarking out any unnecessary terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR)
programs and device drivers.
- Comment out the Load= and Run= lines in the WIN.INI file and make
sure your Windows Startup group is empty. If a third-party font
manager is installed, temporarily disable it.
For more information about starting with a minimum configuration, see
pages 99-100 of the "Getting Started with Microsoft Windows" manual
for Windows version 3.1 or query on the following words in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:
tshoot and clean and boot
- Start Windows in standard mode (Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups
3.1), or start Windows for Workgroups 3.11 with the /d:t or the /d:cfsvx
switch. For more information about how to perform this task in Windows,
see your Windows printed documentation or online Help.
- If you are using Windows 95, start Windows in Safe Mode by restarting
your computer and pressing the F5 key when you see the "Starting Windows
95" message.
- If Setup still hangs after the steps above, you can perform a manual
installation by decompressing the Works 3.0 Setup files and running
ACMSETUP itself using the method below.
Manual Setup
- Make a new directory on a hard drive with at least 1 MB available
disk space. For example, type the following from your MS-DOS prompt:
- Put the Works 3.0 Setup disk (disk 1) in your floppy drive.
- Decompress the Setup files listed below into the new directory by typing
the following from the drive A (or B) MS-DOS prompt and pressing ENTER
decomp <Compressed file> <path>\<Uncompressed file>
where <Compressed file> is the compressed filename, <path> is the path
to the new directory, and <uncompressed file> is the uncompressed
filename. For example, type:
decomp _mssetup.ex_ c:\wkstemp\_mssetup.exe
The following are the files to decompress:
Compressed File Uncompressed File
--------------- -----------------
_mssetup.ex_ _mssetup.exe
acmsetup.ex_ acmsetup.exe
acmsetup.hl_ acmsetup.hlp
mscpydis.dl_ mscpydis.dll
mssetup.dl_ mssetup.dll
setup.in_ setup.inf
setup.st_ setup.stf
works_bb.dl_ works_bb.dll
If there is a problem decompressing any of the Setup files above,
there may be a problem reading the original disks. For information
about troubleshooting disk-read problems during setup, query on the
following words in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
setup and troubleshooting and disk and read
- Click Run from the Windows 3.x Program Manager File menu, or from the
Windows 95 Start menu.
- Type the following into the Command Line field and choose OK to begin
setup:
c:\wkstemp\acmsetup.exe /T setup.stf /S "A:"
NOTE:- The path to ACMSETUP.EXE may vary.
- Change "A:" to "B:" if the Works 3.0 Setup disk is in drive B.
- The "A:" or "B:" drive letter must be capitalized and include the
quotation marks.
- Follow the instructions on the Setup screens to complete the
installation. When Setup is finished, you can delete the WKSTEMP
directory.
