Password Revealed in Converted File |
Q111696
In Word for Windows, if you save a password-protected document in
another file format, the password appears as text in the Protection
Password or Write Reservation Password box and, therefore, is
revealed in the converted file. Word should display only asterisks
in these password boxes at all times. (To locate the Protection
Password and Write Reservation Password boxes, choose Save As from
the File menu and then choose the Options button.)
If you close and then reopen the converted file, the password no
longer appears in either password box. In other words, the password
is only revealed while the converted file is open immediately after
Word converts it.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows. This problem was corrected in versions 6.0a and later of Word for Windows. To obtain Word 6.0c, call the Microsoft Order Desk at (800) 360-7561 and request the Word 6.0c update. If you are outside the United States, contact your local subsidiary.
