SYMPTOMS
Installing Microsoft Publisher to a network server using:
Publisher 2.x - SETUP /N
Publisher 3.x and 97 SETUP /A
command on a system running a shared/network installation of Windows may
result in the following error message:
A directory into which setup should install files is read-
only. Publisher may not install correctly. If the directory
is a network directory, please insure that your network
administrator has installed the proper files.
CAUSE
This message means that the user does not have the necessary privileges
to install programs to the Windows network directory. As a result,
Microsoft Publisher Setup will not work.
Microsoft Publisher requires a number of files to be located in the
Windows directory. Publisher's Setup program attempts to write these
files but will fail if the user does not have the correct write
privileges to the Windows directory.
RESOLUTION
Log in as Supervisor, Administrator or someone who possesses full
privileges.
NOTE: To run Publisher on a shared/network installation of Windows, you do
not need to have the ability to write to the Windows directory; however,
write privileges are required to run Publisher Setup.
