1. Q. I keep getting an error message that says Publisher needs
SHARE.EXE to run. How do I correct this?
A. If you get this error message, check the following three points:
1. Make sure that SHARE.EXE is loading in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
If it is not, add it (see the Publisher README.HLP file for
more information).
2. If SHARE.EXE is in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, make sure it is loading
before you enter Windows or any other shell or menu system.
If in doubt, move the SHARE.EXE line to the top of your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
3. If you are using MS-DOS 4.01, make sure SHARE.EXE is loading in
your CONFIG.SYS file, rather than in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
For more information about correcting this problem, refer to the
Publisher README.HLP file and read the topic "Adding SHARE.EXE to
Your AUTOEXEC.BAT," or order article Q106062 from the Microsoft
Publisher FastTips Catalog.
2. Q. I installed Publisher, and even though the Setup program said it
was completed after Disk 1, Publisher won't run. How can I
get Publisher to run?
A. If Setup gives you the message that installation is complete after
the first disk, it means that you are trying to use Publisher 2.0
with Windows 3.0. Publisher 2.0 has the following minimum
requirements:
- Microsoft Windows, version 3.1 or later
- Microsoft MS-DOS, version 3.1 or later
- A PC with a 286 or higher microprocessor
- Four megabytes of memory (RAM)
- A hard disk with 6 to 13 megabytes of free disk space
- A VGA graphics card
- A Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device
3. Q. How do I set up Publisher on my network?
A. For information about installing Publisher on a network, please
refer to your "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide," Appendix D,
"Using Publisher on a Network."
4. Q. When I try to run WordArt, it says that I don't have any TrueType
fonts installed and tells me to run Setup again. I've done that
but WordArt still doesn’t work. Why?
A. There are three possible causes for this problem:
1. You do not have TrueType fonts installed.
To check for this problem, choose the Fonts icon in the Control
Panel window. Check your list of installed fonts to verify whether
or not you have TrueType fonts on your system.
2. Your TrueType fonts are not enabled.
To check for this problem, choose the Fonts icon from the
Control Panel window. Choose the TrueType button and make
sure the Enable TrueType Fonts option is selected.
3. Your SETUP.INF file has become too large or you have more
than one SETUP.INF file.
To correct this problem, make sure that you have only one
SETUP.INF file and that it is in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory. Rename your SETUP.INF file and copy the SETUP.INF
file from your original Windows disk #1. Exit and restart
Windows.
For more information about correcting this problem, please order
article Q104153.
5. Q. What text and graphic filters does Publisher install?
A. Publisher installs the following text filters:
- Plain text (ANSI)
- Plain text from MS-DOS (ASCII)
- Rich Text Format (RTF)
- Microsoft Works for MS-DOS, versions 2.0 and 3.0
- Microsoft Works for Windows, versions 2.0 and 3.0
- WordPerfect for MS-DOS, versions 5.0 and 5.1
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.x and 2.x
- Microsoft Windows Write, versions 3.0 and 3.1
Publisher installs the following graphic filters:
- Bitmap (.BMP)
- PC Paintbrush (.PCX)
- Tagged Image File Format (.TIF)
- Kodak Photo-CD (.PCD)
- Computer Graphic Metafile (.CGM)
- Windows Metafile (.WMF)
- Micrografx Designer (.DRW)
- Encapsulated PostScript (.EPS)
6. Q. When I try to run the spelling checker, I get a message that says
Publisher cannot load the spelling checker or dictionary and that
I should reinstall Publisher. I have done that and my spelling
checker still doesn’t work. How can I get it to work?
A. There are two possible causes for this problem, either the custom
dictionary contains some corruption or it does not contain a hard
return at the end of the file:
To correct this problem, follow this three-step procedure:
1. In Notepad, open the file CUSTOM.DIC. This file is located in
your WINDOWS\MSAPPS\PROOF directory.
2. If your custom dictionary contains some corruption, check for any
non alphanumeric characters, such as black or white squares, and
delete them.
If the custom dictionary does not contain a hard return at the
end of the file, position your cursor after the last letter of
the last word in the file, and press the ENTER key.
3. Save the file and again try to use your spelling checker.
7. Q. How can I set up Publisher so that it uses certain defaults?
A. Publisher allows you to create a template called NORMAL.PUB
that applies certain settings to your document whenever you
begin creating a new publication.
For more information about creating NORMAL.PUB, and for more
information about which settings NORMAL.PUB can save as default
settings, see your "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide," Appendix A,
"Customizing Publisher By Setting Defaults."
8. Q. What are some basic tips that I can use to try to troubleshoot
problems that I might have with Publisher?
A. For information about troubleshooting Publisher problems,
order article Q112666 from the Microsoft Publisher FastTips
Catalog.
9. Q. Why does Publisher need SHARE.EXE? What is SHARE.EXE and what does
it do?
A. SHARE.EXE is required because of OLE 2.0, which requires the
ability to lock files. SHARE.EXE provides that functionality.
For more information on SHARE.EXE, please refer to your
MS-DOS User's guide.
