1. Q. I keep getting errors 20, 21, 22 or print overrun messages from
my Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet printer. What does this mean?
A. Errors 20, 21, 22, and print overrun messages occur when the data
being sent to the printer exceeds the memory built into the printer.
Other symptoms of this problem include partial printing of a
page and missing objects on the printed page. There are three
possible remedies to this situation:
1. You can add additional memory to the printer. If you choose
this option, be sure to update the Windows printer driver
settings to indicate the new memory available in the printer.
-or-
2. You can remove objects from the page, or reduce the size
of imported scanned graphics by scanning at a lower resolution
or color depth. This reduces the amount of memory required to
print the page.
-or-
3. You can print at a lower resolution. This reduces the amount
of memory required to print the document but will affect the
quality of any graphics within the document.
2. Q. When I print from Publisher, part of the page is missing or is
printed on another page. What does this mean?
A. If part of the page is missing or is printed on another page,
this could mean the data being sent to the printer exceeds the
memory available for printing. LaserJet printers use memory
built directly into the printer, while other printers may use
the memory built into your computer. There are three possible
remedies to this situation:
1. You can add more memory. Depending on what kind of memory
your printer uses, this may mean adding more memory to your
printer or to your computer.
-or-
2. You can remove objects from the page, or reduce the size of
imported scanned graphics by scanning at a lower resolution
or color depth. This reduces the amount of memory required to
print the page.
-or-
3. You can print at a lower resolution. This reduces the amount
of memory required to print the document but will affect the
quality of any graphics within the document.
3. Q. How do I install and remove printer drivers within the Windows
environment?
A. Printer drivers are software devices that Windows uses to
communicate with your printer. The removal and installation
of printer drivers is done through the Printers dialog box,
which is in the Windows Control Panel.
For more information about installing and removing printer drivers,
please refer to chapter 8 of your "Microsoft Windows User's Guide"
in the section titled, "Setting Up a Printer." For additional
help on installing and removing printers, press the F1 key on your
keyboard when you have the Printers dialog box open.
4. Q. How do I create printer output files for my service bureau?
A. To create a printer output file to take to a service bureau,
use the following three-step procedure:
1. Contact your service bureau to determine what type of
printer they will be using, and install the Windows
driver for that printer on your computer.
2. In Publisher, choose Printer Setup from the File menu.
Choose the printer your service bureau will be using,
and choose OK.
3. From the File menu, choose Print. Choose the Print To File
option. Publisher asks you for an output filename.
Enter the path and filename you want to use, and choose OK.
Publisher creates your printer output file. You may now
copy it onto a floppy disk and deliver it to your service
bureau.
The service bureau should use the following MS-DOS command to
copy your output file to the appropriate printer port:
copy a:\<filename> lpt1: /b
For more information about creating and printing printer output
files, please refer to pages 354-355 of your "Microsoft Publisher
User's Guide."
5. Q. How do I create an Encapsulated PostScript (.EPS) file for
my service bureau?
A. To create an .EPS file, you must first install a Windows PostScript
printer driver (such as for the Apple LaserWriter) on your computer.
Use the following seven-step procedure to create the EPS file:
1. From the Control Panel window, choose Printers.
2. In the Printers dialog box, choose Setup.
3. In the Setup dialog box, choose the Options button.
4. In the Print To section, choose Encapsulated PostScript.
5. In the Filename box, type an appropriate path and filename
for the resulting .EPS file you want to create.
6. Choose OK and close the Printers dialog box.
7. In Publisher, choose Print Setup. Select the PostScript
printer you just configured.
Now when you print from Publisher, you will create an
Encapsulated PostScript file you can copy onto a floppy disk
and deliver to your service bureau.
For more information about creating an .EPS file, please refer to
page 356 of your "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide."
6. Q. Pattern filled objects don’t print correctly to my LaserJet
printer. What's wrong?
A. Publisher's pattern fills print as bitmap graphics. Because
LaserJet printers cannot print in color, each pixel in a
pattern-filled object is mapped to either black or white.
Some patterns may not print as expected or at all because of this
limitation. When you print objects containing pattern fills, the
fills may appear too fine, or the object may appear solid, rather
than pattern-filled. The resolution of pattern fills depends on the
printer resolution. At higher resolutions, the lines or dots in some
patterned fills may print so closely together that you are unable to
distinguish the pattern. Printing at a lower resolution makes the
patterns coarser and more recognizable but may affect the quality of
the text and any other graphics you are printing.
On the HP LaserJet Series II and III, printing at a lower resolution
affects only the quality of the graphics. Text continues to print at
the highest resolution.
7. Q. Printing from Publisher seems very slow. Is this normal?
A. Printing certain types of objects from Publisher may take a great
deal longer than expected. This occurs when printing complex
graphics, such as images scanned at high resolutions, or when
printing objects upside down, such as page three of a greeting
card or a tent card. This additional time is normal.
8. Q. How does book format work in Publisher?
A. Book format in Publisher is used to create a book-style publication,
where each printed page contains two or four pages of your
document. For example, if your printer can print duplex (on both
sides of the paper), and you are printing a four-page document in
book format, the output will contain pages 1 and 4 on one side and
2 and 3 on the other. When you fold this printed page, you create
a book with the pages in the correct order.
If your printer can only print on one side of the paper, then
printing a four-page document in book format results in two
sheets of paper; the first contains pages 1 and 4, and the
second contains pages 2 and 3.
Publisher version 2.0a allows you to print just the pages you need
of a book-style publication. To obtain Publisher 2.0a, call the
Microsoft Order Desk at (800) 360-7561. If you are outside the United
States, contact the Microsoft subsidiary for your area. To locate
your subsidiary, call the Microsoft International Sales Information
Center at (425) 936-8661.
9. Q. I’m having problems printing envelopes from Publisher. What's
wrong?
A. The following list describes three of the most common problems you
may encounter while trying to print envelopes from Publisher. There
are articles from the Microsoft Publisher FastTips Catalog you can
order that provide information about resolving these problems:
1. If the bottom portion of your envelope doesn't print to a
Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet 500C, order article Q103035.
2. If you are having problems printing envelopes from Publisher
to a Canon BubbleJet 200, IBM ProPrinter X24e, Canon BubbleJet
10ex, or the Epson LQ-510, order article Q104940.
3. If you are having problems with output alignment when your
printer prints envelopes, order article Q82897.
10. Q. What are the basic steps for troubleshooting printing problems
from Publisher?
A. To troubleshoot printing problems, try the following four steps:
1. Try printing from Write for Windows. If this fails, then
the problem is probably Windows-specific rather than a
problem with Publisher. If this is the case, make sure
that you have the correct printer driver installed and
that it is configured correctly.
2. Make sure that you have a valid TEMP directory and that
the drive on which it is located is not full.
3. Disable Print Manager.
4. Try printing to a different printer.
If the problem seems to be specific to Windows, contact
Microsoft Windows Product Support Services at (425) 637-7098
or refer to your Windows manual for additional information.
If you can print from other Windows-based applications,
review the README.HLP file located in the MSPUB directory on
your hard drive, or refer to pages 356-361 of your "Microsoft
Publisher User's Guide" for more information.
