WD: Lotus Notes Prompts for Setup Following Word 6.0 Installation |
Q112866
If you run Word 6.0 Setup on a workstation on which Lotus Notes is already installed, the next time you try to run Lotus Notes, you may be prompted with the Notes Setup dialog even though the program is already installed on your workstation.
When you run Word 6.0 Setup on a workstation where Lotus Notes is
installed, Setup automatically detects the existence of Notes and installs
a converter that allows Lotus Notes to import Word documents.
To properly install the converter, Word must also modify your NOTES.INI
file. Notes allows the NOTES.INI to exist anywhere on your Notes server or
your local workstation as long as this location is referenced in the PATH
statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. In contrast, Word 6.0 Setup only
searches for your NOTES.INI file in the directory containing NOTES.EXE or
in your Windows program directory. If NOTES.INI is not found in either
location, Word Setup creates a new NOTES.INI file in your Windows directory
containing only the following lines:
[Notes]
EDITIMP1=Microsoft Word,0,_msimp,,.doc,.mcw,.dot,
Because NOTES searches for the NOTES.INI file in your workstation Notes and
Windows directories prior to searching other directories on your path, it
finds and uses the new, incomplete NOTES.INI file created by Word. Because
the INI file doesn't contain other necessary Notes configuration
information, Notes returns its Setup dialog and prompts you to complete
your LAN Workstation Notes installation.
To resolve this problem, obtain Word 6.0c, the latest upgrade for Word 6.0. Call the Microsoft Order Desk at (800) 360-7561 and request the Word 6.0c update. If you are outside the United States, contact the Microsoft subsidiary for your area. To locate your subsidiary, see the Microsoft World Wide Offices Web site at:

Use the following procedure to work around this problem:
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with the Word 6.0 for Windows Setup program. This problem was corrected in version 6.0a of Word for Windows. For information about obtaining Word 6.0c, the latest upgrade of Word 6.0, please see the "Resolution" section of this article.
Microsoft modified Word 6.0a Setup so that if Setup does not find the
NOTES.INI file in the Windows directory or the directory containing
NOTES.EXE, Setup no longer creates a new NOTES.INI file in the Windows
directory.
After Word Setup finishes, you should make sure the Notes directory is on
the path, and then rerun Setup to install the Lotus Notes converter.
