SYMPTOMS

If you open a Microsoft Multiplan version 4.2 for MS-DOS spreadsheet into Word 6.0 for Windows either directly or as a print merge data source, all data is lost, and the cells of the resulting table (or tab-delimited structure if the original spreadsheet contains more than 31 columns) appear empty. This same problem occurs whether you open the entire spreadsheet or only a selected range of cells.

CAUSE

Microsoft has identified this as a problem with the Multiplan converter supplied with the Word 6.0 for Windows revision of the Supplemental Conversion Disk.

This problem does not occur with versions of the converter supplied with previous versions of Word or previous versions of Word's Supplemental Conversion Disk. In addition, the problem does not occur when opening Multiplan version 3.0 spreadsheet files.

STATUS

This problem was corrected in the updated Multiplan converter included in the Word 6.0a for Windows Supplemental Conversion Disks.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this problem, complete the following steps:

  1. Reopen the spreadsheet file into Multiplan 4.2.

  2. Choose Transfer Save and specify a new filename.

  3. Press TAB twice, press SPACEBAR until the Excel save mode option is selected, and press ENTER to save the file in Excel format.

  4. Open the Excel version of your worksheet file created in steps 1-3 above into Word 6.0.
