"_MSIMP.DLL Cannot Be Installed into Notes Directory"

Q112868

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you run Word 6.0 Workstation or Setup on a workstation on which Lotus Notes is already installed, you may receive the following error message:

_MSIMP.DLL can't be installed into Notes directory.
Note: _MSIMP.DLL is a converter file installed by Word 6.0 that allows Lotus Notes to import Word documents.

CAUSE

If the Lotus Notes program file (NOTES.EXE) is located on your network server instead of your workstation Notes directory and the server location is read-only, Word 6.0 Setup cannot write the converter file to the server directory.

Lotus Notes requires that the converter be in the same directory where the Lotus Notes program file (NOTES.EXE) is located. This is a limitation of the Lotus Notes program.

STATUS

The Word Setup program is operating correctly. The fact that converter files must be located in the directory containing NOTES.EXE is a design limitation of Lotus Notes. If that directory is read-only directory, no application will be able to write to that location.

WORKAROUND

To complete workstation installation with the exception of the _MSIMP.DLL converter, choose OK when you receive the error message. Setup will install all other necessary workstation components, as well as update the NOTES.INI in your local workstation Notes directory.

To subsequently install the Notes converter for use with Lotus Notes, request that your network administrator manually decompress the converter file and place the file in the server directory where NOTES.EXE is located.

Assuming as administrator you have read/write access to the Notes server directory, to manually decompress this file:

  1. Copy DECOMP.EXE from Word Setup Disk 1 to the NOTES.EXE directory.

  2. Copy the compressed converter file _MSIMP.DL_ to this same directory. If you have 5.25-inch disks, this file is available on Disk 7. If you have 3.5-inch disks, the file is located on Disk 6.

  3. To decompress the file, type the following:
    decomp _msimp.dl_ _msimp.dll
You can remove DECOMP.EXE and _MSIMP.DL_ from the directory once you've completed these steps.

MORE INFORMATION

If multiple read-only Notes servers exist, your network administrator will need to manually decompress the converter file to the Notes directory on each server.
