PRJ: Err Msg: "The Application...Could Not Be Started" |
Q112995
When you double-click the Microsoft Project icon for a project file that has been sent to you through electronic mail, you may receive one of the following error messages
where FILENAME.MPP is the name of the attached project fileThe application for the attached file 'FILENAME.MPP' could not be started.
When you receive either of these error messages, the attached project file does not open.No application is associated with the attached file 'FILENAME.MPP'. Use the File Manager to create an association.
The first error message appears if your REG.DAT file does not contain
information about Microsoft Project version 4.0. This error message
may also appear if the REG.DAT file has been damaged.
The second error message appears if your REG.DAT file is missing, and if
the following [extensions] and [embedding] section lines do not exist in
the WIN.INI file:
[extensions]
mpp=C:\WINPROJ\Winproj.exe ^.mpp
[embedding]
MSProject.Project.4=Microsoft Project 4.0 Project,Microsoft Project 4.0
Project,C:\WINPROJ\WINPROJ.EXE,picture
To open the attached project file after receiving either of these error messages, start Microsoft Project. You can then double-click the project icon in the mail message and view the attached file.
When you start Microsoft Project, if your REG.DAT file does not contain
information about Microsoft Project, the information is automatically added
to this file to register the application. Additionally, if Microsoft
Project information is not contained in the [Extensions] section in the
WIN.INI file, this information is added automatically to the WIN.INI file
when you start Microsoft Project.
This information must be present in order to embed and activate Microsoft
Project objects in other applications. It is also necessary to associate
Microsoft Project files (.MPP, .MPV, .MPC, .MPW, .MPX) with Microsoft
Project. If this information is not contained in the REG.DAT file, and
Microsoft Project is not running, you cannot view or edit Microsoft Project
embedded objects, attached projects in electronic mail or files in the
Windows File Manager by double-clicking the icon.
