Converted WordPerfect Endnote Text Cannot Be Edited in Word

SYMPTOMS

When you open a WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS or WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.2 for Windows document containing endnotes in Word 6.0 or 6.0a for Windows, if you choose to view endnotes and attempt to modify the content of the first endnote entry, you may not be able to select or edit the leading portion of the endnote text.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the WordPerfect converter supplied with Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.


WORKAROUND

To regain editability of all endnote text, complete the following steps:

  1. Select the PRIVATE field that appears on the first line of the converted document. (If the PRIVATE field does not appear, choose the Show All button on the standard toolbar to display the field.


  2. From the Edit menu, choose Cut to remove the PRIVATE field.


You will now be able to edit all endnote text.


MORE INFORMATION

This problem is known to occur only with the first endnote in a converted document, and the problem does not occur with footnotes.
