Subdocument Links in WordPerfect Files Not Retained in Word |
Q113056
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
SYMPTOM
Word retains the contents that originate in an available subdocument but
does not embedded them within an INCLUDETEXT field when you open a
WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS or WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.2 master document in
Word 6.0 or 6.0a. Instead, Word assimilates these contents into the
converted master document.
If a subdocument is missing, Word will prompt with the following message:
The subdocument <path>\<filename> is missing. Do you want
to open the master document without the subdocument?
If you choose Yes, Word converts the master document, but Word does not
create an INCLUDETEXT field referencing the missing subdocument.
In either case, if you do make the subdocuments available later, you will
not be able to automatically update the master document contents if changes
are made to the supporting subdocuments.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed the loss of links for available subdocuments as a
problem with the WordPerfect converter supplied with Word versions 6.0 and
6.0a for Windows.
The loss of subdocument links for missing subdocuments is a current design
limitation.
We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
WORKAROUNDS
Method 1: If a converted master document includes the contents of an
available subdocument, do the following:
- Select the region of the master document originating from the
subdocument.
- From the Edit menu, choose Cut.
- From the Insert menu, choose File from the Insert menu, check
the Link To File option, and reinsert the subdocument.
Method 2: If a subdocument was missing during conversion of a master
document but is now available, do the following:
- Place the insertion point in the converted master document at
the location where the subdocument text should appear.
- From the Insert menu, choose File, select the Link To File
option, and reinsert the subdocument.
