PRJ4: PlanningWizard Options Ignored w/Incorrect .INI Setting |
Q113203
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Project for Windows, version 4.0
SYMPTOMS
If the Top Gun Case Options setting in your WINPROJ4.INI file is missing values or contains non-numeric values, you are not able to set the
PlanningWizards options from within Microsoft Project.
For example, under this condition, if you turn off an individual
PlanningWizard by selecting the Don't Tell Me About This Again check box when that PlanningWizard appears, that PlanningWizard is only turned off in the current session of Microsoft Project.
WORKAROUND
You can reset the PlanningWizard options by doing either of the following:
- Edit the WINPROJ4.INI file by doing the following:
- Close Microsoft Project.
- In Windows Notepad, open the WINPROJ4.INI file (located in the
WINDOWS directory). Remove the line containing the Top Gun Case
Options setting.
- Save the file and exit Notepad.
- Start Microsoft Project.
The Top Gun Case Options setting is restored to the default
setting, all PlanningWizards are turned on. When you turn off
individual PlanningWizards or all PlanningWizards, they
will still be off when you exit the current session and start
Microsoft Project again.
- Use the Options dialog box
- In Microsoft Project, choose Options from the Tools
menu.
- Select the General tab. Under PlanningWizard, select
the Advice From PlanningWizard check box. Then clear the
Advice About Using Project, the Advice About Errors
and the Advice About Scheduling check boxes.
- Select the check boxes for the PlanningWizards you want to
be displayed and choose OK.
MORE INFORMATION
In the WINPROJ4.INI file, the Top Gun Case Options setting determines whether or not to display an individual PlanningWizard. There are a total of 37 setting values, corresponding to the 37 PlanningWizards. A setting value of "1" means that the PlanningWizard that uses that value appears; "0" means the PlanningWizard that uses that value does not appear.
If this setting is missing a value, the PlanningWizard that uses the
missing value is displayed, and you cannot prevent that PlanningWizard from being displayed by selecting the Don't Tell Me About This Again check box in the PlanningWizard dialog box.
If this setting contains an incorrect value, the PlanningWizard that
uses that incorrect value is not displayed.
In summary, when this setting is missing values or contains incorrect values, this setting cannot be modified from within Microsoft Project
unless you reset all of the PlanningWizards using the steps listed in the
second workaround above.
Steps to Reproduce Behavior
- Exit Microsoft Project. Open the WINPROJ4.INI file in Windows
Notepad. This file can be found in the directory in which you
installed Microsoft Project. Locate the Top Gun Case Options
line, and modify the line to read as follows:
Top Gun Case Options="incorrect settings"
- Close and save the WINPROJ4.INI file and exit Notepad.
- Start Microsoft Project.
- From the Tools menu, choose Options. Select the
General tab.
Note that the Advice From PlanningWizard check box is
selected, and the individual PlanningWizard check boxes are
unavailable (dimmed). Select the Advice About Errors check box
and choose OK.
- In a new project, enter two tasks, T1 and T2 respectively. Select T2,
and choose Task Information from Insert menu. Select
the Advanced tab, and from the Type list, select
Must Start On. Select the Predecessors tab, and in the
Task Name field, type T1 and choose
OK.
A PlanningWizard appears with options for the scheduling
conflict.
- Select the Don't Tell Me About This Again check box and choose
OK.
- Exit Microsoft Project, and choose No in the dialog box that
prompts you to save changes to the file.
- Repeat Steps 5 and 6.
Note that the same PlanningWizard appears even though you chose to disable this PlanningWizard. Also, the Advice About Errors check box on the General tab of the Options dialog box is still unavailable (dimmed).
