The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft ClipArt Gallery, versions 1.0 and 1.1

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run ClipArt Gallery version 1.0, you receive the following error message:

The index file was created by a more recent version of the ClipArt
Gallery. You need to upgrade your software in order to use the
   ClipArt Gallery.

CAUSE

This error message occurs if you have already run ClipArt Gallery 1.1 on your system. When you run ClipArt Gallery 1.1, which is installed with Microsoft Office 4.0 and Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0, ClipArt Gallery writes to the ARTGALRY.INI file. ClipArt Gallery version 1.1 and ClipArt Gallery version 1.0 use different formats for the ARTGALRY.INI file, and version 1.0 cannot read version 1.1 format.

This problem is likely to occur if you perform a workstation/node installation of a product containing ClipArt Gallery version 1.0 (such as Microsoft Publisher 2.0) after installing Microsoft Office 4.0 (or later) or Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0, both of which contain ClipArt Gallery version 1.1. When you install Publisher (or another ClipArt Gallery 1.0 application) after installing PowerPoint or Office on a workstation, both applications have installed the ClipArt Gallery; however the installations are located in different directories.

For Publisher, SETUP /A installs the ClipArt Gallery 1.0 to a subdirectory under the network location of Publisher. For Office and PowerPoint, SETUP /A installs ClipArt Gallery 1.1 to the Microsoft applications directory (typically called \MSAPPS). If Publisher is installed after Office or PowerPoint, ClipArt Gallery version 1.0 is registered last and is therefore the version called for by the destination applications.

The error may also occur if you are running an application such as Publisher locally and another application such as PowerPoint shared from the server.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, reregister ClipArt Gallery version 1.1. To do this, either reinstall Office or PowerPoint from the network, or modify the ARTGALRY.REG file to represent the new version of ARTGALRY.EXE. To modify the ARTGALRY.REG file perform the following steps:

NOTE: To complete these steps, you must know the location of the ARTGALRY.EXE file installed by Office or PowerPoint.

  1. Open File Manager (WINFILE.EXE).

  2. From the File menu, choose Search.

    a. In the Search For: box, type "ART*.REG" (without the quotation marks).

    b. In the Start From: box, type the root drive (for example, C:\).

    c. Select the Search All Subdirectories check box.

NOTE: If this search doesn't find anything; change the value in the Start From: box to the network drive that contains the Publisher network directory.

  3. With the Search Results window open, choose Run from the File menu.

  4. Press the HOME key once, then type "notepad.exe" (without the quotation marks), then press ENTER. This allows you to modify the ARTGALRY.REG file using Notepad.

  5. In Notepad, choose Find from the Search menu.

  6. In the Find What: box, type "\server =" (without the quotation marks), then press ENTER.

  7. Change the path to the ARTGALRY.EXE file to the new location. For example:

    Change

    \server = p:\apps\pub20\artgalry\artgalry.exe

    to:

    \server = p:\msapps\artgalry\artgalry.exe

  8. From the File menu, Choose Save As.

  9. Type "artnew.reg" (without the quotation marks) in the File Name: box.

  10. From the File menu, choose Exit.

  11. Answer "Yes" to the following prompt:

The contents of this drive have changed. Do you want to update Search Results window?"

  12. Select ARTNEW.REG, then press ENTER.

You should then see a message indicating a successful registration.

NOTE: If you receive a message indicating no association, choose Associate from the File menu, type "regedit.exe" (without the quotation marks) in the Associate With: box, and then retry step 13 above.
