SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you assign more than two resources to a task, and the amount of work assigned to any resource is greater than 8 hours (8h), and the last resource is assigned 0 hours of work (0h), you will receive one of the following error messages when you enter a percent complete value greater than zero for the task:

Resource is assigned outside of the dates for Task x
-or-
In Microsoft Project 4.0, if you have the PlanningWizards turned on, the Planning Wizard dialog box appears with the following message:
This action will cause a resource scheduling conflict in task x of <Project>. The task has work assigned to its resources that cannot be completed within the current duration of the task, and the duration of the task is fixed.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving this error message when you edit the percent complete field for a task, assign more than 0 (zero) hours (0h) of work to the last resource you assign to the task.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior in Microsoft Project version 4.0

  1. In a new project, enter a task, T1. Select T1.

  2. From the View menu, choose More Views. From the Views list, select Task Entry, and then choose Apply.

  3. In the Task Form view in the lower pane, in the Resource Name column, type Res1 and choose OK.

  4. In the Resource Name column, below Res1, type Res2. In the Work column for Res2, type 16h and choose OK.

  5. In the Resource Name column, below Res2, type Res3. In the Work column for Res3, type 0h and choose OK.

  6. In the Percent Complete box, type 20% and choose OK.

You receive the error message
Resource is assigned outside of the dates for Task x
or, if you are working in Microsoft Project 4.0 with the PlanningWizards turned on, a Planning Wizard dialog box appears.
