SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you drag a task on the Gantt Chart, and the task is 100-percent complete, the duration changes.

Note that this behavior also occurs when you change the Actual Start date for a task that has been completed. This behavior also affects Work and Cost information for the task.

WORKAROUND

If you want to move a completed task, or change the Actual Start date for a completed task without changing the duration, temporarily change the % Complete value to less than 100%. After you move the task, change the % Complete value back to 100%.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior in version 4.0

  1. In a new project, choose Gantt Chart from the View menu. Enter a task, T1. In the Duration column, type 2d and in the Start column, type Monday.

  2. Select T1, and choose Task Information from the Insert menu. Select the General tab, and in the Percent Complete box, type 100 and choose OK.

  3. Drag the task on the Gantt chart to the following Friday.

The task now has a duration of 1 day (1d), instead of the original duration of 2 days.
