ATM 3.5 Prevents Desktop File from Being Rebuilt

    The information in this article applies to:

    • Macintosh system software versions 7.0 7.01, and 7.1

    SYMPTOMS

    Holding down the key combination COMMAND+OPTION while restarting the Macintosh fails to prompt you to rebuild the desktop.

    CAUSE

    This problem can occur if Adobe Type Manager (ATM) version 3.5 is running.

    WORKAROUND

    To rebuild the desktop, use one of the following methods:

    1. Start or restart the Macintosh while holding down the SHIFT key.
    2. When you see the "Welcome to Macintosh Extensions off" message, immediately release the SHIFT key and hold down the COMMAND+OPTION key combination until you are prompted to rebuild the desktop.

      -or-

    3. At the Finder, press the key combination COMMAND+OPTION+ESC to force the Finder to quit.
    4. When prompted, hold COMMAND+OPTION while you click Force Quit. You are then prompted to rebuild the desktop.
