SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you attempt to add a button to a toolbar that is floating outside of the Microsoft Project window, the new button will be added to a new toolbar rather than the intended floating toolbar.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, make sure that the toolbar that you want to add the button to is not floating outside of the Microsoft Project window.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Make sure that the Microsoft Project window is not maximized. (From the control menu, choose restore.)

  2. From the Tools menu, choose Customize, and then choose Toolbars.

  3. Position a toolbar outside of the Microsoft Project window by clicking on a blank space in a toolbar and dragging it out of the Microsoft Project window.

  4. Drag a button from the Customize dialog box onto the toolbar floating outside of the Microsoft Project window.

Instead of creating a new button on the existing toolbar as expected, a new toolbar containing only the selected button is created.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
