SUMMARY

Advanced: Requires expert coding, interoperability, and multiuser skills.

There is an updated Btrieve ISAM driver available in the Microsoft Software Library (MSL). This driver is only for use by registered owners of Microsoft Access version 1.1 or Visual Basic version 3.0 for Windows, Professional Edition. By downloading this driver, you are indicating that you are a registered owner of one of these products. For downloading instructions, please see the "INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING" section later in this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The updated driver (Btrv110.dll) uses text indexes, with the exceptions described in the "Using Btrieve Indexes" section of the Btrieve.txt file. The Btrieve.txt file is shipped with Microsoft Access 1.1 and Visual Basic 3.0.

You can tell the updated driver from the original driver by its file size or version number. The updated driver has a file size of 104,560 bytes. The original driver has a file size of 104,432 bytes. The driver should be located in either the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, in a stand-alone installation, or in the ACCESS directory on a shared drive, in a network installation.

If you are running Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, you can use File Manager to check the driver's version number. In File Manager, select the driver, and then choose Properties from the File menu. The updated driver is version 1.10.0011, while the original driver is version 1.10.0001.

How to Install the Update

Stand-Alone Installations:

  1. Make a backup copy of the Btrv110.dll file by renaming the file or copying it to another location.

  2. Copy the new Btrv110.dll file to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

Network Installations:

  1. The network administrator should make a backup copy of the Btrv110.dll file by renaming the file or copying it to another location.

  2. The network administrator should copy the updated Btrv110.dll file to the ACCESS directory on the shared drive.

  3. The network administrator should make the updated Btrv110.dll file available to those who have installed Microsoft Access to their local drives. These users should copy the file to their local WINDOWS\SYSTEM directories.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the Microsoft Access Setup program, the updated Btrieve driver will be replaced with an older version if Setup is run after you install the updated driver. To prevent this, do any of the following:
  • Run SETUP /N and choose No in answer to the question "Do you want to install Microsoft Access on your hard disk?"
  • In Setup, choose the Custom Installation option. Choose the Select button, then clear the Btrieve check box. The will prevent Setup from overwriting the updated driver with the original.
  • In Setup, choose the Minimum Installation option.
