PRJ: File Size Zero (0) Bytes Saving File to Network Drive |
Q113581
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Project for Windows, versions 3.0, 3.0a, 4.0
SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you save a project file to a Novell Netware,
Microsoft LAN Manager network server, or a Microsoft NT server, the
following symptoms may occur:
- If you are saving the file for the first time, the file appears on
the network drive with a file size of 0 bytes.
-or-
- If you open a file on the network server, make a change in the file,
and then save the file to the same location, the file size does not
change.
CAUSE
Because of the way these servers are configured and the way MS Project
writes its files, the changes you make to a Microsoft Project file on the
network drive are not written to the hard disk (updated) until the file is
closed.
WORKAROUND
To update the file size information when you save a Microsoft Project file
to a network server drive, do any of the following:
- Close the file after you save it in Microsoft Project, and then open
the file again to make more changes. This causes the file
information to be updated on the server, and the correct file size
appears.
-or-
- Save the file to the .MPX file format. When you save a file to the
.MPX format in Microsoft Project, the file is automatically closed
and the changes are updated on the network server.
-or-
- If you are saving the file to a Microsoft LAN Manager server, the
LANMAN.INI file can be modified with the following steps (contact
your network administrator to see about having this change made to
the server):
- Open the LANMAN.INI file in Windows Notepad or another text
editor.
- Locate the wrkheuristics option in the [workstation] section, and
change the 10th digit in this setting to a 0. Do not change any
other numbers in the setting. The following is an example of a
setting change:
Before modifying:
wrkheuristics = 111121001221000000000000000000000
After modifying: (change this digit only)
^
wrkheuristics = 111121001021000000000000000000000
- Save and close the LANMAN.INI file. Make sure that all of the
users are disconnected from the server, and then reboot the
server.
The 10th bit in the wrkheuristics option in the [workstation]
section of the LANMAN.INI controls how the network responds to MS-
DOS commit requests. By default, this parameter commits the changes
to the server but it is up to the server to commit the changes to
disk.
-or-
- If you are saving the file to a Novell Netware server, the
workstation NET.CFG or SHELL.CFG file can be modified with the
following steps (contact your network administrator to see about
having this change made to the workstation):
- Logoff of the server.
- Open the NET.CFG or SHELL.CFG file in Windows Notepad or another text
editor.
- Locate the NetWare DOS Requester section and add the following
line:
True Commit = On
- Save and close the *.CFG file and then reboot the workstation.
This behavior occurs when you save a file to a computer that is running the
Novell Netware, Microsoft LAN Manager or Microsoft NT server software. This
is not a problem when you save a file to your local hard drive, or to a
Microsoft Windows for Workgroups server drive.
Steps to Reproduce Behavior
(The following steps assume you can save files to a drive on a Microsoft
LAN Manager or Microsoft NT network server from your computer.)
- In a new project, enter a task, T1.
- From the File menu, choose Save As. In the File
Name box, type Test. From the
Drives list, select a network drive on a Microsoft LAN Manager
or Microsoft NT server. Choose OK.
- Start the Windows File Manager. From the View menu,
choose All File Details. Locate the file TEST.MPP that
you saved in Step 2.
Note that the file has a file size of 0 bytes.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
