PRJ4: Uncompleted Work Not Rescheduled on Project Update

Q113755

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you send a task Update Request message to a resource assigned to the task, uncompleted work is not rescheduled if no work has been completed by the resource.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the resource that is updating the task does not enter any value in the Work Completed field. If no work has been completed on the task, the task is not rescheduled with a later finish date.

WORKAROUND

To make sure that remaining work is rescheduled when you reply to an Update Task Request message, do either of the following:

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Project, when you enter a date in the Reschedule Uncompleted Work To Start box in the Update Project dialog box, if a task does not have an Actual Start date, it is rescheduled to start on this date you entered, with a Start No Earlier Than (SNET) constraint. However, the Update Project button in the Update Request dialog box does not reschedule a task if no work has been completed on the task.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. In a new project, enter a task, T1. Select T1.

  2. From the Standard toolbar, choose the Resource Assignment button. In the Name column, enter your email name and choose Assign.

  3. From the File menu, choose Save As. In the File Name box, type Update and choose OK.

  4. From the Tools menu, choose Workgroup, and then choose Request Task Update. In the Workgroup Mail dialog box, choose OK.

  5. In the Update As Of box, type 1:00 PM after today's date (so the box contains <today's date> 1:00 PM). Choose Send.

  6. Start your mail program, and open the Update Request message. Choose Reply.

  7. In the Work Completed column, type 0. In the Remaining Work column, type 1d and in the Comments column, type I haven't started. Choose Send.

  8. Open the Update Request message. Choose Update Project.

The task is still scheduled to start today at 8:00 AM and to finish today at 5:00 PM, even though the task has not been started as of 1:00 PM today.
