Project: How and Where Custom Options Are Stored

Microsoft Project 4.0 provides a number of options that affect the project working environment. You can set these options in the Options dialog box (from the Tools menu, choose Options). Many of these options are project specific, and are saved with an individual project file.

The Preferences dialog box in Microsoft Project 3.0 has been replaced with the Options dialog box. The options available in this dialog box affect either how Microsoft Project operates (for example, how it performs calculations, scheduling, and so on) or how Microsoft Project information is displayed.

Most of the options you set in the Options dialog box are saved in the WINPROJ4.INI file (this file replaces the Microsoft Project 3.0 WINPROJ.INI file). WINPROJ4.INI is located in your Windows directory.

Some of the entries in the WINPROJ4.INI file function as default values and may be overridden by the options you set in an individual project. The options that can now be saved in individual projects (such as Default Hours Per Day, and Default Duration Type) are those that are most likely to vary between projects.

The following tables indicate which options are saved only in the WINPROJ4.INI file, and which are project-specific. (Remember that values for the project-specific options are saved in the WINPROJ4.INI file as well, but these values serve only as default values for new projects).

Selecting the Set As Default button in any of the Options tabs writes the current option settings to the WINPROJ4.INI file, at which point they become the new defaults.

Two other tabs in the Options dialog box, Module General and Module Format, allow you customize the Visual Basic Applications development environment. These settings are stored in the file VBA.INI located in the Windows directory. This file is used by any Visual Basic-aware applications, such as Microsoft Excel 5.0 and Microsoft Project 4.0, to store module settings.
