SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you link a task that contains a subproject to a constrained task such that a scheduling conflict occurs, you receive the following error message every time you edit or enter a task in the subproject until you resolve the conflict:

Late date before scheduled date in subproject...

CAUSE

This problem occurs when a task that contains a subproject is linked to a successor task, such that it causes a conflict with the successor task's scheduled dates. This causes a "Late date before scheduled date in <successor task>" error message to occur. This error message appears only once. However, the "Late date before scheduled date in subproject..." error message appears each time you edit or add a task to the subproject while the main project file is open.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving this error message multiple times, correct the scheduling conflict that is causing the error.

Note that if you have the Planning Wizard options selected on the General tab of the Options dialog box, the Planning Wizard message that appears gives you some options to correct the scheduling conflict.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

1. From the Help menu, choose Contents. Choose the Search button.



2. In the Search dialog box, type error messages and choose Show Topics. Choose the Go To button.



3. From the Alerts Table Of Contents list, select the Late Date Before Scheduled Date In Subproject option.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

1. In a new project, choose Summary Information from the File menu. In the Start Date box, type July 12, 1993 and choose OK.



2. In the project, enter two tasks, T1 and T2.



3. Select T1 and T2, and choose the Link Tasks button from the Standard toolbar.



4. Select T1, and choose Task Information from the Insert menu. Select the Advanced tab, and then choose the Browse button. From the File Name list, select a project file with a duration of longer than one day. Choose OK. In the Task Information dialog box, choose OK.



5. Select T2, and choose Task Information from the Insert menu. Select the Advanced tab. From the Type list, select Must Start On. In the Date box, type July 13, 1993, and choose OK.



6. If a Planning Wizard dialog box appears, select the option to continue and set the Must Start On constraint, and choose OK. Then choose to continue and allow the scheduling conflict.



7. Double-click T1 to open the subproject.


You receive the "Late date before scheduled date in subproject..." error message.


8. Enter another task in the subproject.
