PRJ: Error Importing .MPX From a Localized Edition

Q113821

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you open an .MPX file that has been saved in a localized edition of Microsoft Project (French or German), you receive the following error message:

An error occurred during import (line #13)

Project start date not valid
If you choose No to continue without the error messages, the following occurs:

Microsoft Project 4.0

The project file opens.

Microsoft Project 3.0

The project file opens, but the task names in the project are missing.

NOTE: In a localized edition of Microsoft Project version 3.0a, when you open an .MPX file saved from the U.S. edition of Microsoft Project, the same behavior occurs.

CAUSE

These errors occur when Microsoft Project reads a field in the .MPX file format from a different language that contains text as part of a value. For example, the Duration field may contain the value "1j" in the French version, but when you open the file in the U.S. version, this value is not recognized as "1d."

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving these error messages, when you save a file from the U.S. version of Microsoft Project and the file will be opened in the French version of Microsoft Project (or vice versa), save the file in the .MPP file format. This file format is compatible across different languages.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

If you continue the import and choose Yes, you receive the following error messages:
Duration not valid

Value not valid; must be Yes or No

Delay not valid

Date not valid
If you choose No to cancel the error messages, the file opens.
