SYMPTOMS

In a bar chart containing both positive and negative values, the X-axis labels (indicated by the Category X series) display over the negative bars of the chart. Works for Windows displays the X-axis labels directly below the X axis. There is no way to move these labels within the chart portion of Works.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create a new spreadsheet and enter the following data in cells A1 through C7 (that is, A1:C7):
          1993 1994
          January -50 -25
          February -100 -50
          March -75 -35
          April 25 50
          May 50 75
          June 75 100

  2. Select A1:C7.
  3. From the Tools menu, click Create New Chart.
  4. In the New Chart dialog box, select a bar chart and click OK.
The X-axis labels display over the negative bars on the chart.

WORKAROUND

To move the X-axis labels in Chart:

  1. From the Edit menu in the Chart, click Copy.
  2. Create a new Word Processor document.
  3. From the Insert menu, click Drawing.

NOTE: Draw may need to be Maximized to few the entire chart.
  4. From the Edit menu in Draw, click Paste.

The chart will now be a picture in Draw. You can now drag and drop the X-axis labels to any position on the chart.
  5. From the File menu in Draw, click Exit and return to the Word document.
  6. Click Yes when the Microsoft Draw Update dialog box appears.
NOTE: With this workaround, you will need to repeat the above steps to update the chart in the Word Processor document.
