SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you save a project file that uses multiple resources with the same name from a resource pool, or you save the resource pool, the fields calculated from the resource assignment fields contain incorrect values.

CAUSE

If your project uses multiple resources with the same name from a resource pool, the resource assignment changes to the first instance of the resource in the pool when you save either the project or the resource pool. This causes the fields in the project to be calculated using the cost and work information for the first instance of the resource, rather than the instance that you assigned to the task.

This behavior occurs because when you share resources in a pool, a resource is uniquely identified by the resource name, not the ID, because the resource ID changes when you add and remove and use resources in the resource pool.

resource and pool and name and renumbers
Note that this behavior does not occur in a project that is not sharing resources.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. In a new project, choose Resource Sheet from the View menu. Enter the following resource information:

  2.
          ID Name Std. Rate
           1 a $0.00/h
           2 Res1 $0.00/h
           3 Res1 $0.00/h
           4 Res1 $10.00/h
           5 Res1 $20.00/h
  3. From the File menu, choose Save. In the File Name box, type pool and choose OK.

  4. From the File menu, choose New. Enter a task, T1.

  5. From the Tools menu, choose Multiple Projects, and then choose Share Resources. Select the Use Resources option, and select POOL.MPP from the From box.

  6. From the Window menu, choose Split so that the Task Form appears in the lower pane. On the Gantt chart, select T1. In the ID column in the Task Form, type 4 and press ENTER. In the ID column below the resource you just assigned, type 5 and choose the OK button.

  7. Select the view in the upper pane. From the View menu, choose Table and then choose Cost.

  8. The Total Cost column for T1 contains $240.00.

  9. From the File menu, choose Save. In the File Name box, type Sharing and choose OK.

  10. Note that the ID numbers of the resources assigned to T1 change to 2, although the total cost is still $240.00.

  11. On the Gantt chart, select the right end of the T1 task bar, and drag it to the following day to change the duration of T1.

The Total Cost field now contains $0.00.
