SYMPTOMS

When you copy a task that is formatted with a start or end shape in Microsoft Project, and you then paste the task to another project as an object or a picture, the start and end shape of the task bar prints as a solid block on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series 4/4M printer.

Note that this also occurs when you paste a task as a picture or object to a document in Microsoft Word, or a worksheet in Microsoft Excel, and then print to an HP LaserJet 4/4M printer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you print using the HP LaserJet Series 4/4M printer driver version 1.20, 1.26, or 1.27 (HPPCL5E.DRV) as the default printer, and HP-GL/2 is selected in the Graphics Mode list in the Options dialog box for the printer.

WORKAROUND

To paste tasks to another project (or to another application) as an object or picture, and then print to an HP LaserJet 4/4M printer, do either of the following:

Choose the Copy Picture button from the Standard toolbar, and choose the For Printer option to copy the tasks in Microsoft Project. Then paste the tasks to the Microsoft Word document.

Change the printer Graphics Mode option from HP-GL/2 to Raster with the following steps:

In Microsoft Project, choose Print from the File menu.

Choose Printer. In the Print Setup screen, choose the Setup button. Choose OK in the dialog box that warns you about changing your printer settings.

Choose the Options button. In the Options dialog box, select Raster from the Graphics Mode list. Choose OK three times. Choose Cancel in the Print dialog box if you do not want to print.

Note that this same behavior occurs when you choose the Choose the Paste Link option from the Paste Special dialog box in Microsoft Word for Windows. This behavior also occurs when you choose the Copy Picture button from the Standard toolbar in Microsoft Project, and when you choose the For Screen option.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

In a new project, enter three tasks, T1, T2, and T3.

Select T1, T2, and T3, and choose the Link Tasks button from the Standard toolbar.

With the tasks still selected, choose Bar from the Format menu. Under Start Shape, select a shape from the Shape list. Under End Shape, select a shape from the Shape list. Choose OK.

With the tasks still selected, choose Copy from the Edit menu.

Start Microsoft Word for Windows version 6.0. In a new document, choose Paste from the Edit menu.

From the File menu, choose Print.

The tasks bar Start shapes have black squares behind them, and the bars seem to print over the top of them on the right half of the shape.

Expected: Start shapes should be printed as they show on the screen.
