Default Formatting Lost Opening View File in Project 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Project 1.0 or 3.0 view file in Microsoft Project version 4.0, the formatting displayed in some of the views is different than it is in earlier version of Microsoft Project.


CAUSE

In Microsoft Project, if you don't modify the formatting of an item contained in the view file, for example the pattern for a noncritical task bar, the item is not saved to the view file. This behavior is by design. When you open a view file, the default formatting for any item contained in the view file is used if the item is not found in the view file.

The default formatting for some of the items in the view file in Microsoft Project version 4.0 is different from the version 3.0 formatting. Because of this difference, when you open a Microsoft Project version 3.0 view file in Microsoft Project version 4.0, and you have not changed the formatting of any of the items in the version 3.0 view file, some of the items appear with formatting that is different from the formatting they had in Microsoft Project version 3.0.


WORKAROUND

To avoid having the formatting of items in your version 3.0 view file appear differently when you open the file in Microsoft Project version 4.0, if Microsoft Project version 3.0 is available to you, do the following:

  1. Open the view file in Microsoft Project version 3.0.


  2. Change the formatting of any item in the view file. For example, choose Text from the Format menu. From the Font box, select 12, and choose OK.


  3. From the View menu, choose Define Views. Choose the Save button. In the Save View As dialog box, choose OK. In the Define Views dialog box, choose Close.


All of the items in the view are saved with their formatting in the view file. You can change the item formatted in step 2 above back to the original formatting if desired.


MORE INFORMATION

To change the formatting of items in Microsoft Project version 4.0 to the default formatting of the items in the Microsoft Project version 3.0 view file, VIEW.MPV, when you do not have access to Microsoft Project version 3.0 to use the workaround provided above, you must manually change the formatting of the items. The following is a list of the differences in the formatting of some of the default items in the Gantt Chart view between versions 4.0 and 3.0.
