BUG: FoxPro Quits Immediately When Help Is Called

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft FoxPro for Windows, versions 2.5, 2.5a, 2.5b
Microsoft FoxPro for Macintosh, version 2.5b

SYMPTOMS

When HELP is called, FoxPro quits, displaying one of the following error messages:

FoxPro for Windows
------------------

System Error. Divide by Zero or Overflow Error

After choosing the OK button, the following Application Error displays:

FOXPRO caused a Stack Fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0001:81DA.

FoxPro for Macintosh
--------------------

The application "Microsoft FoxPro" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 4 occurred.

The application "unknown" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 4 occurred.

CAUSE

An empty .DBF-style Help file was called.

RESOLUTION

Create at least one record in the Help file. Even if this record is blank, the error no longer occurs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in FoxPro versions 2.5, 2.5a, and 2.5b for Windows and in FoxPro version 2.5b for Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

Assuming the default directory is set to the main FoxPro directory (usually FOXPROW in FoxPro for Windows or "FoxPro" in FoxPro for Macintosh), type the following commands in the Command window:

SET HELP OFF USE FOXHELP.DBF COPY STRUCTURE TO TESTHELP.DBF SET HELP TO TESTHELP.DBF SET HELP ON HELP

FoxPro quits, displaying one of the error messages mentioned above.
