Percentages Show Incorrectly when Using Dates in Pie Chart

SYMPTOMS

Works pie charts that use cell contents that are dates for the 1st Data Labels and percentages for the 2nd Data Labels will have incorrect values for the percentages.

WORKAROUND

To get the correct percentages for the 2nd Data Labels in the pie chart, enter the dates for the 1st Data Labels as text in the spreadsheet. The dates can be entered as text by starting the entry with a quotation mark (") (that is, "1/5/94 or "January).

The incorrect percentages are generated when Works takes the numerical value of the date (that is, 34459 for 5/5/94) and multiplies it with the first percentage that is generated from the data.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create a new spreadsheet in Works.
  2. Enter the months January, February, and March in cells A1, A2, and A3, respectively.
  3. Enter the numbers 10, 20, and 30 in cells B1, B2, and B3, respectively.
  4. Select cells A1 through B3. From the Tools menu, choose Create New Chart.
  5. Select the pie chart and choose OK.
  6. From the Edit menu, choose Data Labels.
  7. Select Cell Contents for the 1st Label, and Percentages for the 2nd Label. Choose OK.
The Data Labels on the chart will now be incorrectly shown as January (57225.0%), February (57276.7%), and March (57323.3%).

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works versions 3.0 and 3.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
