Selecting Audio Driver in Control Panel Causes Error

SYMPTOMS
When you install or select a multimedia sound card driver in Control Panel,
the following DR WATSON error message may appear:
An application error has occurred and an application error log is being
generated.
CONTROL.EXE
Exception: Illegal Instruction (xxxxxxxx) Address (xxxxxxxx)
Then Control Panel quits and you are unable to remove the driver.
CAUSE
This error message appears when MIPS or Alpha versions of the drivers have
been installed instead of the Intel (I386) versions.
RESOLUTION
To avoid this problem, replace the existing drivers with the correct
versions, expanded from disk or CD-ROM.
To determine which driver files are installed when a specific sound card is selected, look at the [installable.drivers] and the individual driver
sections in the MMDRIVER.INF file. This file is in the SYSTEM32
subdirectory. The drivers are usually placed in the SYSTEM32 or
SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directories, or both.
You can then choose to delete the files and remove the sound card reference from the Drivers utility of Control Panel, and then reinstall the drivers. Otherwise, you can manually expand all the driver files for that card from disk or CD-ROM using the EXPAND.EXE utility.
