Leading WordPerfect Paragraph Numbers Lost in WinWord

SYMPTOMS

When a WordPerfect document contains more than one level of legal or user- defined paragraph numbering and each level is defined to include numbering from the previous level, numbering from the previous level is lost in Word.

For example, WordPerfect's predefined legal paragraph numbering definition might be used to create a multilevel numbering layout similar to:

   1. Level One
   1.1 Level Two
   1.1.1 Level Three
In this example, the second level inherits the leading "1." from the first level, and the third level inherits the "1.1." from levels one and two. When such a document is opened into Word, the resulting multilevel numbering in Word appears incorrectly as:

   1. Level One
   .1 Level Two
   .1 Level Three

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

  1. Select the affected region of the converted document.

  2. From the Format menu, choose Bullets And Numbering, and select the MultiLevel tab.

  3. Select the appropriate multilevel format option, and choose OK.

Multilevel numbering will be restored.
