Text Preceding WordPerfect Paragraph Numbering Lost in Word

Q114829

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOM

When you open a WordPerfect document that contains paragraph numbering ([Paranum: ] codes) preceded on the same line by normal text, the text preceding the paragraph number may be lost. For example, if a WordPerfect document contains the code string

Section [Paranum:Auto]
the result might appear in WordPerfect as:
Section 1.1
However, this may instead appear in Word as:
1.1

CAUSE

Depending on how paragraph numbering is applied within your WordPerfect document, Word may convert it to heading numbering or a multilevel list. In either case, if text precedes the paragraph numbering code in WordPerfect, Word may fail to add this text to the Text Before numbering field.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the WordPerfect converter supplied with the versions of Word listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

  1. In the converted document, position the insertion point in one of the affected paragraphs.

  2. Choose either Heading Numbering or Bullets And Numbering from the Format menu (whichever option is active), and select the Multilevel tab.

  3. Choose the Modify option, and select the affected heading or numbering level.

  4. Insert the text you want to appear preceding the paragraph number, and choose OK.

Appearance is restored to the current range of numbered paragraphs.
