WordPerfect Paragraph Number Skipped in Conversion to Word

SYMPTOMS

When a WordPerfect document containing paragraph numbering is converted to Word, one or more paragraph numbers in a numbering sequence may be skipped. At locations where a number is skipped, an unwanted continuous section break is also inserted. For example, if a set of paragraphs is numbered in WordPerfect as 


   1.
   2.
   3.
this numbering sequence may instead appear in Word as: 

   1.
   3.
   4.


CAUSE

This problem will occur at locations where paragraph numbering ([ParaNum: ]) codes are preceded in WordPerfect by a text string and tab ([Tab]) character, and the text string differs from the text string preceding the last numbered paragraph. For example, a formatting code sequence that will generate this problem might appear in WordPerfect Reveal Codes similar to: 


   [Tab]Section [Par Num:Auto]
   [Tab]Subsection [Par Num:Auto]
In this example, the change in the text string from "Section" to "Subsection", in conjunction with the [Tab] code will cause a skip in numbering in Word.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the WordPerfect converter supplied with Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.


WORKAROUND

In Word, search for and remove each unwanted continuous section break. The original paragraph numbering sequence will be restored. A section break can be found by searching for the special character ^b.
