WordPerfect Paragraph Numbering Restart Not Retained in Word

Q114831

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When a WordPerfect document containing a paragraph numbering sequence including a numbering restart is opened into Word 6.0 or 6.0a for Windows, the numbering restart may be ignored. For example, if a numbering sequence appears in WordPerfect as

   1.
   2.
   1.
   2.
   3.
this numbering sequence may instead appear in Word as:

   1.
   2.
   3.
   4.
   5.

CAUSE

WordPerfect utilizes paragraph numbering ([Par Num: ]) codes independently as well as within outlines. Word therefore currently imports paragraph numbering as a multilevel list in some cases and as heading numbering in others. This is done to enable differentiation between outlines and independent paragraph numbering for maximum format retention in possible subsequent return conversion to WordPerfect format.

If a paragraph numbering sequence containing a numbering restart is converted to heading numbering, Word will not restart a converted numbering sequence.

Microsoft has confirmed this as a problem in the WordPerfect converter supplied with Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

  1. A continuous section break typically appears at a converted numbering restart location. If one does not appear, insert a continuous section break immediately preceding the paragraph in which you desire heading numbering to restart in Word.

  2. Position the insertion point beneath the relevant section break and choose Heading Numbering from the Format menu.

  3. Choose the Modify button, select the "Restart Numbering at each New Section" option, specify the desired restart at value, and choose OK.

The numbering restart is restored.
