SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Subtotals command to remove subtotals from a list, your data shifts one column to the right on the worksheet if the first column in your list had subtotals.

CAUSE

When you add a subtotal to a column in a list, subtotal headings are added to the column to the left of this column. When you add a subtotal to the first column in your list, an extra column is inserted to the left of your list, moving your list one column to the right. When you remove the subtotals, this column is not removed.

For example, if the range A1:B6 contains your list, and you add a subtotal to the data in column A, subtotal headings are added to column A, and your list is moved to the range B1:C6. When you remove the subtotal, the subheadings in column A are removed; however, your list remains in the range B1:C6.

WORKAROUND

To correct this behavior, you can remove the extra column by selecting the column, and choosing Delete from the Edit menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
