The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Excel version 4.0 chart file in Microsoft Excel version 5.0, and you update the chart file to the Microsoft Excel 5.0 format, the chart file size increases by a large amount.

If you save a chart created in Microsoft Excel version 4.0 to the Microsoft Excel 4.0 Chart format in Microsoft Excel version 5.0, the chart file size increases by approximately 100 bytes.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design in Microsoft Excel version 5.0. When you save a Microsoft Excel version 4.0 chart file to the Microsoft Excel 4.0 chart format in Microsoft Excel version 5.0, the chart file size increases by 100 bytes because of extra font records.

When you update a Microsoft Excel version 4.0 chart file to the Microsoft Excel 5.0 format, the chart is saved as a workbook that contains a single chart sheet. The workbook contains certain sheet formatting information, even if the book only contains the single chart sheet. The following is a breakdown of the information that is saved in a Microsoft Excel version 5.0 workbook file:

1800 bytes: For the Microsoft Excel binary interchange file format
(BIFF). This is data about the workbook such as formatting
               and style information.

2000 bytes: For object linking and embedding (OLE) version 2.0 docfile
               header information.

3000 bytes: For the preview metafile in the summary information stream
if you have the Prompt For Summary Information option
               selected.

WORKAROUNDS

You can avoid adding the additional 3000 bytes to any Microsoft Excel version 5.0 workbook file by saving the file without summary information. Do the following to turn off the Summary Information option.

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.

  2. Clear the Prompt For Summary Info check box, and choose OK.

Note that if you have saved a workbook with summary information, you cannot decrease the size of this workbook by turning off the summary information option and saving the file. Instead, you must turn off the summary information option, move or copy the sheets in the workbook to a new workbook, and then save the new workbook.
