Q115243

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you choose Open or Save from the File menu, Microsoft Project may hang (stop responding). In addition, the following MS-DOS message may appear in the menu bar area:

Insert diskette for drive B: and press any key when ready.

CAUSE

This problem may occur under the following conditions:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Use the DOS ASSIGN.COM program to assign drive B to drive A. When you make this change, the command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file will resemble the following:

ASSIGN.COM B=A
NOTE: If the system is does not have a floppy disk drive or a hard disk drive or if the workstation has both an A and a B floppy disk drive, the above method does not work.

NOTE: ASSIGN.COM is not available with versions of MS-DOS after 5.0. If you are using a later version, use SUBST.EXE instead.

Method 2

Use a RAMDRIVE. For example, you could insert the following line into your CONFIG.SYS file:

DEVICE = C:\DOS\RAMDRIVE.SYS 4 /e
This creates a ramdrive using 4K of extended memory.

Method 3

If you are working on a workstation connected to a Novell Network, obtain and install the latest VLM (not NETX) redirector drivers. For more information about obtaining Novell workstation shell drivers, please see the following article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
