SYMPTOMSIn Microsoft Excel, when you place a chart data label on top of one of the chart axes, the chart axis text, such as a tick mark label, or the axis title, shows through the data label; however, the chart axis itself does not show through the data label.
CAUSEThis behavior occurs when you format a chart data label with a solid pattern, and you move the chart data label to one of the chart axes so that the label is on top of the chart axis text. The chart axis text shows through the data label, even though the data label has a solid pattern, and the chart axis itself does not show through. Note that if you move a chart data label on top of the chart title, the title does not show through a chart data label. Also, if you move a data label on top of a text box on a chart, the text in the text box shows through the data label. However, if the text box is formatted with a solid pattern, the text box covers the data label.
WORKAROUNDTo avoid this behavior when you move a label over the chart axis, insert the label as a text box on the chart. Chart axis text does not show through a text box label on a chart.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
