The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, the text in a list box on a worksheet disappears or is clipped when you decrease the row height or hide a row on the worksheet that contains the list box.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the list box is grouped with another object, and the Move And Size With Cells option is selected for the group object. When you group two or more objects, this option is selected by default on the Properties tab of the Format Object dialog box. When this option is selected, the height of the object increases and decreases with the height of the cells that contain the object.

When you create a list box, the minimum height you can give the list box is approximately two rows on a worksheet. When this minimum height is decreased, the items in the list box become clipped, and eventually do not display. Additionally, the list box scroll bar arrows disappear when the list box is sized to less than the minimum height.

Note that when you select a list box that is not contained in a group of objects, the Move And Size With Cells option is not available.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this behavior when you group a list box and then change the height of the cells that contain the group object, set the Object Positioning option for the group object to either of the following:

  • Move But Don't Size With Cells

    -or-

  • Don't Move Or Size With Cells
