The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you format the area color on a chart legend, the legend text background appears either transparent or opaque, depending on the area color and the text color that you choose.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because, by default, the text background option for a chart legend is set to Automatic. This means that when the legend area color is the same as the legend text color, the text background appears opaque. Otherwise, the legend text background appears transparent.

WORKAROUNDS

To change the text background option for a legend to opaque or transparent, follow the appropriate procedure below for your version of Microsoft Excel.

Microsoft Excel versions 5.0, 7.0

  1. Double-click the chart legend to display the Format Legend dialog box.

  2. Select the Font tab, and from the Background list, select either Transparent or Opaque. Choose OK.

Note that the color that is used behind the text when you choose the Opaque setting is determined by the color selected in the Patterns list on the Pattern tab of the Format Legend dialog box.

Microsoft Excel versions 4.0 and 4.0a

  1. Double-click the chart legend to display the Patterns dialog box.

  2. Choose the Font button. Under Background, select either the Transparent or the Opaque option. Choose OK.

Note that the color that is used behind the text when you choose the Opaque setting is determined by the color selected in the Foreground list in the Patterns dialog box.
