SYMPTOMS

You may see two extra characters--two boxes--added to the end of a style name when you copy text from Word 6.0 for Windows to the Windows Clipboard and paste it in Word 2.x for Windows.

Even though the style name has these two extra characters added to it, the style should still function properly, with all style formatting being applied to selected text.

CAUSE

If the RTF for a style name has carriage return and line feed (CRLF) characters after it, Word 2.0 includes the CRLF characters at the end of the style name. The CRLF characters appear in Word 2.0 as boxes at the end of the style name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Save the file in Word 6.0 and open it in Word 2.0 rather than copying and pasting it. Word 2.0 can read Word-6.0-formatted files if the Word 6.0 converter (for Word 2.0) has been installed. Word 6.0 can also save in Word 2.0 format.
