Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q117273
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you open Slide Show in Microsoft Excel version 4.0 for the Macintosh, if the file was created in Microsoft Excel version 4.0 for Windows, you may receive the following error message

Cannot find SLIDES.XLA!mcs03.TemplateAutoOpen which has been
assigned to run each time <document> is opened. Continuing
could lead to erroneous results. Cancel Open?

where <document> is the name of the worksheet being opened.

When you choose the No button, you will receive the following error message:

   Cannot find SLIDES.XLA!mcs73.TemplateAutoActivate.

NOTE: You will receive a similar error message when you open a Microsoft Excel 4.0 for Macintosh slide show file in Microsoft Excel for Windows.

CAUSE

The above error message appears because the template document on which the slide show was created is linked to the SLIDES.XLA file instead of SLIDE SHOW ADD-IN (the Macintosh version of SLIDES.XLA).

WORKAROUND

To correct this problem, do the following to change the link from SLIDES.XLA to SLIDE SHOW ADD-IN:

  1. Open the slide show file.

  2. From the Options menu, choose Unprotect Document.

  3. From the File menu, choose Links.

  4. In the Links box, select SLIDES.XLA and choose the Change button.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Excel for Windows, select SLIDE SHOW ADD-IN.

  1. From the dialog box, select the SLIDE SHOW ADD-IN file. This file is located in the MACRO LIBRARY folder, which is located in the folder in which Microsoft Excel was installed.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Excel for Windows, select SLIDES.XLA. This file is located in the LIBRARY directory which is located in the directory in which Microsoft Excel was installed.

  1. To save the new links, choose Save from the File menu.

MORE INFORMATION

Slide Show is an add-in macro that shipped with Microsoft Excel version 4.0. To create a slide show from Microsoft Excel worksheets, charts, and other graphics, you can use this add-in with the slide show template document called SLIDES.XLT (Windows) or SLIDE SHOW (Macintosh).

In Microsoft Excel version 4.0 for Windows, the Slide Show macro add-in file is named SLIDES.XLA (SLIDE SHOW ADD-IN in Microsoft Excel version 4.0 for Macintosh).
