Project: Cannot Open 1.0 .MPP Files in 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Project 1.0 .MPP file in Microsoft Project version 4.0, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Project 1.0 files can only be opened if first saved in the .MPX file format from Microsoft Project 1.0.
However, you will not be able to change Microsoft Project version 1.0 files to .MPX files if you installed Microsoft Project 4.0 over Microsoft Project 1.0.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you will need to reinstall version 1.0 of Microsoft Project to a separate directory and save the .MPP file from Microsoft Project for Windows version 1.0 in the .MPX file format.
