SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a file that was saved to a networked drive such as a Network File System (NFS) network, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Unknown Subproject

Invalid Filename

CAUSE

These error messages occur because of the way these networks store their path structure. On some networks, the path for Microsoft Project 4.0 will be appended to the subproject or the resource sharing the path structure. On Banyan Vines networks, the backslash characters (\) will be replaced by at signs (@). On other networks, the backslashes will be replaced by forward slashes (/).

WORKAROUND

To correct this problem, change the "Store Net Names=Yes" in the WINPROJ4.INI file to "Store Net Names=No." After this change has been made, you will be able to open the files successfully.

To change the Store Net Names= line:

1. Quit Microsoft Project.



2. In a text editor such as Windows Notepad, open the WINPROJ4.INI file (this file is located in the Windows subdirectory).



3. In the WINPROJ4.INI file, scroll to the "Store Net Names=YES" line and change the "YES" to "NO" (without the quotation marks).



4. Save the file and quit Notepad.



5. Restart Microsoft Project 4.0.
   
   The file should open without any errors.

1. Open the resource pool file, responding "No" to subsequent messages regarding automatically opening files using the resource pool.



2. Open each project file that uses the resource pool.



3. After all the files are open, choose Exit from the File menu, responding "Yes" for saving each of the files.



4. Restart Microsoft Project 4.0.
