Baskerville Old Face & New Caledonia Are Not Spaced Correctly

SYMPTOMS

Printing a document using the Baskerville Old Face font or the New Caledonia TrueType font results in too many spaces between words.

CAUSE

This behavior is reported to occur when you print to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4Si.

NOTE: Both the HP LaserJet IIISi and Okidata OL-810 printers print the above fonts properly.

WORKAROUND

You can work around this problem by printing TrueType fonts as graphics or by downloading TrueType fonts as bitmaps.

To Print TrueType Fonts as Graphics

  1. Click the Start button on the taskbar.
  2. On the Settings menu, click Printers.
  3. Click the appropriate printer icon with the right (secondary) mouse button, then click Properties.
  4. Click the Fonts tab.
  5. Click Print TrueType As Graphics.

To Download TrueType Fonts as Bitmaps

  1. Click the Start button on the taskbar.
  2. On the Settings menu, click Printers.
  3. Click the appropriate printer icon with the right (secondary) mouse button, then click Properties.
  4. Click the Fonts tab.
  5. Click Download TrueType As Bitmap Soft Fonts.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Baskerville Old Face and the New Caledonia TrueType fonts from the Microsoft TrueType Font Pack II. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
